Akassa
Akassa town is community along the Nun River estuary and the Atlantic Ocean of Southern Bayelsa State, Nigeria.
Akassa surrounding communities include Twon-Brass, Sangana and Kamatoru.
Rural Development
Pro-Natura International Nigeria a knowledge management, networking and capacity-building agency is currently
utilizing the Niger Delta Institute of Sustainable Development as a model of participatory rural development in
Akassa. With institutional structures established by the Akassa communities and facilitated by Pro-Natura
(Nigeria), the people of Akssa are now able to effectively manage and realise their own development goals. The
Akassa Development Foundation (ADF) also disburses funding to communities in Akassa for mico-projects. In
each community led project, the ADF and Akassa Community Development Council conducts participatory
appraisal to identify priority micro-project. Prominent Nembe Ibe royal chiefs such as HRM Alfred Diete-Spiff, King of
the City of Twon-Brass and Chief Wapabinyo Columbus Amade-Basi of Okpoma both embrace the Akassa
Development Fund.
Akassa Development foundation is essentially another way to describe the Akassa people. It features:
1. An overseeing General Assembly with equal representation from all surrounding communities.
2. A Board of Trustees and steering Committee: elected from the General Assembly. These two committee monitor
the day to day work the ADF.
3. A Secretariat and nine ADF institutions, which embrace the entire Akassa communities.

Nembe Ibe USA's Community-based Health Care Initiative address these items:
- Provision and distribution of medical supplies such as blood pressure monitors, glucose meter kits for
diabetics and digital thermometers to community medical clinics in Twon-Brass, Okpoma, Nembe and
Akassa Townships.
- Provision of health educational materials and organizing health awareness activities such as 3K races and
health seminars.
