History of Nembe Ibe USA
By John Idumange
In 2000-2003 there were internal conflicts between various communities in the Nembe Ibe. This ugly development
concerned me, John Amabebe and Aye Omuso. During the same period, there were many killings and destruction of
property so much that we drafted a letter to the Nembe chiefs and kings to try to resolve the issue. The letter was signed
by about ten or so Nembe Ibe citizens living in the United States and was sent home through Nelson Sambo of Seattle.
Mr Nelson Sambo went home, but we never heard from him since. Assuming that our efforts had failed, I kept talking to
Aye Omuso and John Amabebe about what we, the Nembe Ibe people living in the United States, could do to make a
change back home.
Sometime in 2005, me and John Unfortunately, due to logistical and financial problems, the organization never took off.
In 2006, I started a Nembe blog called "Nembe: The Small Brave City State." Thereafter, I was discussing the issue with
Salome Alagoa of Washington DC, when she suggested we should have a Nembe Day to bring all Nembe people
together in one place to celebrate the Nembe culture. Later, Abis Igoni of New York suggested that the term "Nembe" no
longer represent the whole Nembe community from Akassa to Oluasiri. He suggested that the best way to represent the
whole community is to call the organization Nembe Ibe. I continued to discuss the idea of forming an organization with
various Nembe Ibe people. Finally, I had enough people to sign on to the idea, especially when Chief Timipre Sylva,
native of Okpoma, became the Governor of Bayelsa State in 2007. However, the logistic of running an organization where
individual members are scattered all over the nation was overwhelming, until Aye Omuso suggested that we could
conduct all our meetings by Teleconference. This idea was not only brilliant and efficient, but he also volunteered to pay
the bill until the organization has earned enough money to pay for the bill. Hence, in August 2007, Nembe Ibe USA was
formed, with Aye Omuso as the head of the organization, Alfred Fetepigi and Allen Spiff of Chicago as secretary and
extremely important members in drafting our constitution and moving the organization forward.
In August 2008, we held our inaugural national convention in Chicago and we elected Andrew Eperi of Chicago as our
first President and Francis Ginah of Indiana as the Vice-President. Aye Omuso was elected as the first Chairman of the
Board. The main aim of the organization is to create peace in the community by creating a vibrant educational and
economic environment with easy access to health care for all.
